Loudoun Literacy Council Announces New Executive Director

Leesburg, VA: The Loudoun Literacy Council Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Judy Hanley, Ph.D., as the nonprofit’s new Executive Director. Dr. Hanley brings extensive nonprofit leadership experience, having served in leadership roles with INMED Partnerships for Children from 2000 to 2006, Loudoun Child Advocacy Center from 2007 to 2022, LAWS Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services from 2017 to 2022, and A Place To Be from 2022 to 2023. In each position, she helped guide meaningful organizational changes. Hanley has also been nominated for and received numerous awards for her work in Loudoun County. She earned her doctorate in human development from the University of Maryland at College Park in 2000, with a specialization in child development with an emphasis on brain development research.

As Executive Director, Hanley is working with the Board of Directors to rebuild the 46-year-old nonprofit. “We are thrilled to name Judy as Executive Director,” said Leslie Lewis, Loudoun Literacy Council’s Board Chair. “We feel fortunate to have her experience, expertise, and passion as she helps stabilize the organization and prepare it for its next chapter.”

Hanley’s executive leadership experience and strong commitment to human services will help advance the organization’s mission. “Judy has arrived at a pivotal moment in our organization’s growth,” Lewis said. Loudoun Literacy Council’s mission is to teach adults essential English reading, writing, speaking, and communication skills, empowering them to pursue employment opportunities, advance their education, and participate more fully in their community.

Loudoun Literacy Council currently offers English as a Second Language classes through several 12-week courses at Loudoun County Public Libraries; GED classes; the third year of its Sterling Middle School Pilot Program, which helps parents and caregivers engage with their children’s schools and support student success; and its newest program, “ESL for Daily Living,” held in its co-located space with Loudoun Hunger Relief on Miller Drive in Leesburg.

Dr. Hanley stated: “I am so happy to be back in Loudoun County helping some of our most vulnerable neighbors access vital services and pursue their goals for themselves and their families. I am grateful to our board members and individual donors for their continued support of this important cause. Loudoun Literacy Council also could not provide these services without our partnerships with the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, the Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties, Loudoun Hunger Relief, and Loudoun County Government. I am also excited to announce our newest partnership with Amazon, which is helping us create a language management system that will enable us to better serve our clients and manage data in a new and meaningful way.
